Boston was hosting Detroit on its annual Marathon Monday game, and Gray was taking the mound for the Red Sox. The right-hander was off to a great start as he went 2. 2 innings, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out two.

Gray pitched two scoreless innings before allowing a lead-off double to Matt Vierling, who came around to score two batters later on a single from Jake Rogers. After walking Gleyber Torres, following a strikeout of Kevin McGoingle, Gray appeared to be injured. Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey immediately went out to the mound along with manager Alex Cora and a trainer.

After some discussion, the Red Sox pulled Gray due to the injury after throwing just one warm-up pitch. In relief of Gray, Boston turned to left-hander Danny Coulombe, who got Colt Keith to ground out to second baseman Marcelo Mayer to end the inning. Itโ€™s a disappointing ending to Grayโ€™s start, as he was pitching well and was limiting the Tigers' offense.
