Kentucky Wildcats News: Donnie Freeman Watch
Kentucky basketball landed Alex Wilkins over the weekend in the transfer portal as head coach Mark Pope and his staff continue to work on shaping out the team’s roster for the upcoming season. This week, it appears the Wildcats are in position to land at least one of Donnie Freeman or Sebastian Rancik. Pope lost several key contributors in his front court with only Kam Williams and Trent Noah (both playing small ball power forward) as well as Malachi Moreno (true center, pending NBA draft decision) returning this fall.
While either of these players would surely provide a boost to the team, Freeman seems like the obvious choice. He’s been a double-figure scorer in each of his two seasons at Syracuse in addition to grabbing seven rebounds per game across the same two seasons. He’s been a decent three-point shooter but would really give Kentucky a sense of toughness inside along with being a reliable free-throw shooter for the team to rely on.
Following Freeman cancelling his visit with UConn, it appears Kentucky is up against St. John’s & Rick Pitino as the two leading teams for his services next season. Barring any sort of surprise, fans could very well be on their way to seeing a UK commitment come from Freeman at some point this week.
