20th April – Five Memorable Celtic Moments on This Day
20th April – Five Memorable Celtic Moments on This Day Five memorable Celtic moments, with a nod to the late Celtic Historian and Celtic Star legend David Potter, on this day starting in 1907… David Potter’s Celtic Books David’s bestseller The Celtic Rising ~ 1965: The Year Jock Stein Changed Everything completely sold out in print but is available on Amazon kindle, with all the photographs of the hardback edition, for HALF PRICE at just £3. 49 … Peter Somers scored twice ONE – SATURDAY 20th APRIL 1907 – Celtic beat Hearts 3-0 in a Scottish Cup Final to show the world what a great side they are, for they are at the top of the Scottish League as well as Scottish Cup winners for the 5th time. The game is a little one-sided, and although Hearts moan about a few refereeing decisions, the 50,000 crowd see a great Celtic display with two goals from the ever-inventive Peter Somers and a penalty scored by Willie Orr.
Andy McAtee scored TWO – SATURDAY 20th APRIL 1912 – The League season ends in a whimper with a 1-1 draw against Raith Rovers in front of a meagre crowd of 4,000. The Scottish Cup is safely in the bag, but the Scottish League has been lost once again. But there are some good youngsters appearing, one of them being Andy McAtee from Croy who scored today.
The main topic of conversation, however, is the extent of the disaster in the North Atlantic involving the “unsinkable” HMS Titanic Bobby Lennox scored THREE – SATURDAY 20th APRIL 1968 – Desperation time at Celtic Park as Bobby Lennox scores (with his shin! ) the scrappiest goal of his life, but it keeps Celtic at the top of the Scottish League on goal average with only one game to be played. Earlier Willie Wallace had scored, but Morton had equalised, and looked like holding out for a draw.
That same Morton had been the team who had drawn with Rangers on Wednesday to equal to allow Celtic to draw level in the League race. Parkhead celebrated as if the League had been won. WATCH THIS… 20th April 1974, Bobby Lennox scores this goal in a 2:0 win over Aberdeen.
FOUR – WEDNESDAY 20th APRIL 1983 – The death wish continues as Celtic, having lost to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup semi-final on Saturday, now blow up at home to Dundee United to imperil their chances of winning the League and everyone can predict that they will now go to Pittodrie on Saturday and lose again. Not without cause are fingers pointed at Charlie Nicholas who was mysteriously missing on Saturday, but restored tonight. Although he scores a penalty in the 2-3 defeat, he fails to produce the victory that Celtic needed.
