When it became clear that top-tier target Paulius Murauskas was likely heading to Arizona State, Mark Pope quickly pivoted, bringing Colorado transfer Sebastian Rancik to Lexington for an under-the-radar visit.

Unfortunately for the coaching staff, that stealth mission did not result in a signature. Rancik has officially committed to Florida State on Sunday, according to Joe Tipton , leaving the Wildcats still searching for a versatile, floor-spacing big man as the portal entry deadline rapidly approaches. For fans trying to picture how Rancik would have fit into Mark Pope’s plans, you only need to look at the role Andrew Carr played in Pope’s first year.

At 6-foot-11, the Colorado product possesses a unique offensive profile that was glaringly absent from the Wildcats’ rotation last season. He is a legitimate perimeter threat who can pull opposing bigs out of the paint, but his true value lies in his vision. Rancik is highly effective at acting as an offensive hub, passing from the top of the key and finding cutters with precision.

While the offensive upside is tantalizing, Rancik is not a finished product by any means. He probably wouldn’t be in the portal if he were. If he is going to log heavy minutes, there is one major area of development he must address: His presence in the paint.
