'I want the world record for marathon using crutches'
Peter Lloyd hopes to set the Guinness World Record for completing a marathon using crutches.
Peter Lloyd is set to take part in Manchester Marathon later [BBC] A man who had his leg amputated in 2018 after being diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer hopes to set the Guinness World Record for completing a marathon on one leg using crutches. Peter Lloyd, who was diagnosed with a high-grade osteosarcoma in 2011, said he wanted to show others that you can achieve anything when you put your mind to it. He is one of 42,000 participants taking part in the Manchester Marathon later.
"My purpose is to say there is a life - you can do this," said the 44-year-old father-of-three. "Barriers are there for you to either go around them, go through them, go under them, or however you want to get past that barrier, you can do it. " Peter completed his first marathon in 2019 in a wheelchair in three hours and 18 minutes and 28 seconds.
But he decided he wanted to push himself further to raise funds for the Bone Cancer Research Trust. "So the world record for completing a marathon with one leg and crutches is five hours, 37 minutes and 43 seconds," he said. "So I thought, I'll do that.
" He is hoping to secure a finish time of about five hours. Peter opened up about his running journey for a Radio Manchester series [BBC] He is under no illusion about how difficult the challenge ahead will be but he is determined to have fun while doing it. "I've got no hands to be able to stand," he said, speaking about how he would need to hold his crutches at all times.
