Fyffe’s extra inning walk-off clinches series for Bears
SPRINGFIELD–Logan Fyffe had never hit a walk-off home run in his entire life, until he cranked a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 12th to propel Missouri State to a conference series clinching victory against Western Kentucky, on Saturday. The Bears (26-10) were able to outlast the Hilltoppers by rallying from a 6-4 deficit in the bottom of the 9th, thanks to number 9 hitter, Gabe Roessler, delivering a clutch 2-run single with the bases loaded. MSU had the winning run standing on third, with one out, after that, but wasn’t able to bring it home then.
Fyffe’s heroics mark the third time this season that MO State has won a game with a walk-off home run. The victory also improved the team to a school record, 17-0 at home, this spring, and it sets up the possibility for the team to sweep Western Kentucky, if they can earn the win, on Sunday. Taeg Gollert, who gave the Bears their first lead with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the 3rd, became the first player in program history to drive in 40-or-more rbi in a season, four years in-a-row.
That impressive feat comes on the heels of Gollert setting the school record for most career doubles, on Friday. The Bears finish their series with Western Kentucky on Sunday at Hammons Field at 1 p. m.
