Shams Charania on how ‘digging’ into Donald Trump’s 2020 administration led to political contacts

At one point, it extended into an entirely different world, one that unexpectedly helped him stay ahead of the curve during one of the biggest NFL Draft nights. That summer was interesting because I picked up a lot of contacts in different realms,” Charania said. He added, “I was really bored at different points because my whole life is structured around games and covering the league and everything. ” With leagues paused and schedules disrupted, Charania found himself building relationships outside his usual NBA ecosystem.
Those connections eventually played a role when it came time to break early selections during the 2023 NFL Draft. “Robert Kraft, Mark Cuban, etc. I remember digging in on the meetings that were taking place with the return to sports under Trump’s watch. I picked up some political contacts during that,” Shams concluded.
