Why Bryson DeChambeau has done LIV Golf no favors for the entirety of 2026

But while CEO Scott O’Neil attempts to force positive PR into the world, Bryson DeChambeau is doing his best to drag LIV Golf down by its ankles. His outburst at LIV Mexico City did the rounds, as he slammed the course conditions to the rules official, and was seen gesturing towards the greens in exasperation after a series of missed putts.

This was the last thing LIV needed as it seeks new investment for next season, and it wasn’t even the first time this year the two-time major winner has caused significant damage to the league that he is effectively the face of. LIV Golf has a serious DeChambeau problem. The American is reportedly asking for around $500 million to re-sign, an eye-watering sum, but that looks unlikely to be agreed upon now. Maybe once that was possible, when the PIF had a seemingly bottomless well of money, but now that the league is seeking a new investor to pay the bills, it’s hard to imagine anyone would be willing to pay DeChambeau that sum. Especially with the negative noise he’s creating for the league.

First, he was vocally opposed to LIV’s change to a 72-hole format, which was introduced to allow players to earn Official World Golf Ranking Points and better prepare them for majors. “Not what I signed up for”, was the message from DeChambeau. Not helpful.

Then, after entering The Masters with LIV’s hopes on his shoulders, having won the last two events, DeChambeau embarrassingly missed the cut. He triple bogeyed the 18th to fall beneath the cut line and packed his bags without speaking to the media. Now, this outbreak in Mexico City is the last thing the tour needed during a tumultuous week.
