St. John Paul II baseball wins district title in extra-inning thriller

Ryan Galinis pitched 6 2/3 innings of relief and drew a bases-loaded walk to win the District 13-2A title for St. John Paul II.

BOCA RATON — A different hero every game. That's been the formula for St. John Paul II Academy in dominating Palm Beach County high school baseball this season.

In a marathon District 13-2A championship game on April 17, it was Ryan Galinis' turn to take the spotlight. He pitched 6 2/3 innings of brilliant relief and drew a bases-loaded walk in the 12th inning to force in the winning run in the Eagles' 6-5 victory over King's Academy. St.

John Paul (23-3), the county's No. 1 team for most of the season, clinched a berth in the Region 4-2A playoffs. The Eagles will host a quarterfinal game on April 25.

This was a back-and-forth struggle that featured spectacular defensive plays, inspired pitching performances and high drama. King's Academy (16-11) rallied from a 5-1 deficit to tie the score with a four-run sixth inning. Just when it appeared the momentum had swung to the Lions, however, Galinis took the mound.
