The Spaniard faced intense competition from Fermin Lopez for the attacking midfield role, with the latter often emerging as Hansi Flick’s preferred option in key matches. That early perception, however, has taken a sharp turn in recent months.
What’s the story? Rather than fading away, Olmo has rebuilt his importance within the squad and he has done so by leaning into one of his greatest strengths: versatility. Whether deployed as a false nine, operating behind the striker, or dropping deeper to dictate play, Olmo has adapted seamlessly to multiple roles, making himself impossible to ignore.
To put it in perspective, since the turn of the year, he has featured in all 27 available matches for both club and country in 2026. Furthermore, his recent performances have only strengthened his case ahead. Against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final second leg, Olmo delivered a standout display , earning MVP honours despite Barcelona falling to a 1-2 defeat.
