No. 23 Michigan State tennis defeats Indiana keeping Big Ten title hopes alive

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – No. 23 Michigan State outlast Indiana and take down the Hoosiers 4-3, staying in the race for a regular season Big Ten Title.

A title the program hasn’t won since 1967. Indiana won the doubles point but Michigan State responded back in the No. 3 singles match as Ozan Baris defeated Jip Van Assendelft in straight sets (7-6, 6-3) to pick up the first singles match.

At No. 6 singles, Mitchell Sheldon defeated Aidan Atwood in straight sets as well (6-3, 7-6). In No.

5 singles, Danial Rakhmatullayev picked up a win for the Spartans as well in a match that would go three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-2). After Indiana picked up two wins in singles matches as well, it would all come down to the last match between Michigan State’s Matthew Forbes and Michael Andre. Forbes would win the match (5-7, 6-3, 6-3) and help the Spartans escape with the close overall win.

“There’s only one thing to think about,” said Forbes. “You have to focus and figure out a way to deliver. Just control everything you can control.
