Joe Ryan Shows Why He's Minnesota Twins' Ace Despite Loss on Friday

The veteran is Mr. Reliable for the Twins.

The Minnesota Twins lost 2-1 to the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, but not because of starting pitcher Joe Ryan. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with six strikeouts against no walks over six innings, bringing his ERA to 3. 29.

Ryan allowed just one baserunner over the first three frames before running into trouble in the fourth. The 29-year-old struck out Reds second baseman Matt McLain before allowing a double to shortstop Elly De La Cruz. Then, first baseman Sal Stewart reached on a throwing error by Twins third baseman Ryan Kriedler, allowing De La Cruz to advance to third.

Cincinnati third baseman Eugenio Suarez then deposited a two-run double to center, which ended up being the winning hit. Ryan retired the remaining eight hitters he faced, but his offense mustered just one run in support. If Kriedler hadn't made an error, then Ryan would've just given up one run on the Suarez double, and he wouldn't have earned the loss.
