He isn’t going anywhere. As a restricted free agent, all the Red Wings are required to do to retain his rights is to present him with a qualifying offer by July 1. They will do that.
That’s when the bargaining really begins. And as we saw a couple of years ago, when both Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider were RFAs, it can take a long time for both sides to find a resolution. In each of those instances, the players agreed to terms on pacts that would keep them in Detroit for the next eight years.
