Mitchell girls golf takes third place at season-opening meet

Apr. 17—HARRISBURG, S. D.

— Mitchell High School girls golf opened the season Thursday with a third-place team finish and three individuals in the top-10 at the Harrisburg Invitational at Spring Creek Country Club. Mia Larson and Maddie Childs both shot rounds of 6-over-par 77 to tie for fifth, and Anna Eliason shot 78 to finish eighth, leading the Kernels in the 13-team season-opening event. Brynlee Sabers was the fourth golfer to add to the MHS team score, shooting 90.

Emma Reinesch shot 92 and Kate Schutz shot 93 for the Kernels, as well. Aberdeen Central was the team champion with a four-player score of 304. O'Gorman placed second (321), followed by Mitchell in third (322), Brandon Valley in fourth (337) and Sioux Falls Lincoln in fifth (344).

Defending state champion Olivia Braun, of Aberdeen Central was in form to claim the individual medalist honors, shooting 6-under-par 65. The South Dakota State University commit had eight birdies, including four on the front nine to shoot 31 going out. Yankton's Ellia Homstad was second with a 72, while Watertown's Gabi Olson was third with a 74, and O'Gorman's Geneva Frederickson shot a 75 to take fourth place.

Aberdeen's Kyley Wirebaugh joied Larson and Childs in a tie for fifth place and shot 77. Mitchell is next in action on Tuesday, April 21 at the Huron Quadrangular with Aberdeen Central and Watertown. The first tee shots are scheduled for 11 a.
