GGF baseball preview: Sacred Heart sorts out new roles after major offseason departures

Apr. 17—EAST GRAND FORKS — It can be nice to enter a season with proven commodities across the field, using pen rather than pencil to fill in the lineup card. For the most part, East Grand Forks Sacred Heart hasn't had that luxury this year.

The Eagles graduated their top four offensive producers and lost roughly 75% of their innings on the mound. That includes star pitcher Parker Erickson, who's now in his freshman season at St. Cloud State.

All the question marks, though, can be exciting for a team still sorting out roles. "There are surprises every year," Sacred Heart head coach Paul Bethke said. "Even when you think you have it set, there's always something that comes up.

If someone is forced to play somewhere one day because of illness, injury, whatever, and you go, 'Oh, I didn't realize he could help us there. ' With a lot of newcomers, it's like, where are you going to put them? It becomes a fun challenge to get guys to where they're going to have their best chance for success, which in turn helps our team.

" That doesn't mean the cupboards were left completely bare in the offseason. Isaac Sundby and Liam Larson are two returning seniors who will provide production in the lineup and leadership. "Isaac is an awesome leader," Bethke said.
