Union Berlin's Coach Marie-Louise Eta speaks during a press conference for the team ahead of their match against VFL Wolfsburg, at the Stadion an der Alten Foersterei. Andreas Gora/dpa Marie-Louise Eta has received a letter from FIFA ahead of her historic debut as head coach of Union Berlin's men's team. "The appointment of a female head coach to a top position with the men's team advances our game as a whole and sends a strong signal to many other girls and women around the world that they too can dream of working as coaches at the highest level, in both women's and men's football," wrote Jill Ellis, chief football officer at FIFA, in a personal letter to Eta.

Eta became the first woman to be appointed coach of a men's team in one of Europe's top leagues. She will make her debut for Union on Saturday against VfL Wolfsburg. "Becoming the first female head coach in one of Europe's top five men's leagues is not only a significant achievement for you personally.

It is also a testament to your hard work and the contribution you and Union Berlin have made to the development of the game," the letter read.
