MSSU men's golf finishes 10th at MIAA
The Missouri Southern State University men’s golf team struggled in Tuesday’s second round and finished tied for 10th after the third and final round Wednesday at the MIAA men’s golf championships at the Jefferson City Country Club. Zachary Gardner led the Lions after the first round Monday with a 3-over 75. Britten Coy and Max Templeman were not far behind, with each golfer carding a 4-over 76.
Templeman went 2-over (74) on Tuesday and Coy logged a 5-over 77. At Wednesday’s final round, Coy and Gardner shot their best rounds of the tourney with each carding 1-over 73. Templeman finished with a 3-over 75 Wednesday.
Southern finished tied for 10th with Rogers State University in the field of 11 teams with a combined 48-over, one stroke behind Pittsburg State University, which finished ninth. The Lions were 16-over after Round 1, struggled in Round 2 on Tuesday with a 24-over, but had their best round (8-over) Wednesday. The University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos went 11-under for their second straight MIAA title.
The University of Central Missouri (10-over) was second and Washburn University (14-over) was third. UCO claimed the top three spots individually and all five of its golfers finished in the top 11. Templeman led the Lions with a 9-over (76, 74, 75-225) to finish 22nd.
Coy (76, 78, 73-227) was 29th, Gardner (75, 81, 73-229) was 36th and Owen Derryberry (77, 79, 80-236) finished 50th. The MSSU women will compete at the MIAA women’s golf championships with Round 1 beginning Monday at Mules National Golf Club in Warrensburg.
