One of the nice surprises of the young 2026 Major League Baseball season has been the emergence of San Diego Padres as World Series contenders.
More importantly, it looks like the Los Angeles Dodgers have not only some stiff competition in the National League, but in their home state of California. A key reason why the Padres have been on such a run lately, at 9-1 over their last 10 games, is because of their rising star and absolute stud centerfielder Jackson Merrill. The 22-year-old has been everything and more for this franchise this season, and that was apparent in their walk-off 7-6 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
Merrill robbed a big-time homer off the bat of Mariners superstar Julio Rodriguez in the third inning. He went up and over the wall and brought that ball back in. But, his most heroic work came in the ninth inning, when he slapped an opposite-field double down the left-field line to bring in the game-tying and game-winning run.
What a night for the kid. Merrill is now on a five-game hitting streak and is batting . 261 on the season.
