USA TODAY Sports names North Carolina as a early loser in the transfer portal

The North Carolina Tar Heels are still navigating the transfer portal, attempting to put together their roster under new head coach Michael Malone. So far, North Carolina has one new addition, but did welcome back a few players from last season. While the Tar Heels have lost players, there's still a long way to go with room to add.

But early on, one writer doesn't believe the Tar Heels are doing a good job. Ehsan Kassim of USA TODAY Sports wrote on his winners and losers from early in the transfer portal and had the Tar Heels as a loser. Here is what he said about the Tar Heels: With Hubert Davis out and Mike Malone in, the Tar Heels will have a different look for the 2026-27 season, which includes a brand-new backcourt.

On top of that, top recruit Dylan Mingo reopened his commitment. However, unlike the other teams on this list, Malone has started his rebuild with a strong addition of Neoklis Avdalas. I'm guessing the reason why UNC is listed as a loser is due to the Dylan Mingo decision.

In the article, it's mentioned he reopened his recruitment but many sources close to the program reported that UNC moved on from him due to some concerns. It's hard to agree about UNC being a loser here as they have added a nice piece in Neoklis Avdalas , and they may not be done, either.
