Huff, Hale give Glenwood more of the same in comeback win over Routt

Routt struck first with two runs in the top of the first before Glenwood pitcher Dylan Huff settled in and Quinten Hale provided an offensive spark.

CHATHAM — Some rocky moments have turned into a great stretch. That’s not just a way to describe the first month the Chatham Glenwood baseball season, but it was also exactly how the Titans’ 9-2 win over Jacksonville Routt played out on Wednesday at the Bob Erickson Field in Community Park. Dylan Huff overcame a rough opening inning when the Titans’ pitcher allowed two runs on three hits, including a double by Routt leadoff batter Talon Thompson.

The next batter, The State Journal-Register's Small School Boys Basketball Player of the Year Bryson Mossman , then singled and Thompson gave the Rockets a quick 1-0 lead. Two hitters later, cleanup hitter Jacob Brown helped push Mossman across the lead — with the help of a Glenwood error — for a 2-0 advantage. “Dylan wasn't real sharp in the first inning, and they came out swinging the bats well, barreled some balls up, and put some pressure on us,” Glenwood coach Casey Erickson said.

"(Huff) got better as the game went on. (Routt’s starter Brady) Turner's got a good arm, but we finally got to him and got him out of the game (in the fifth inning), which we wanted to do as early as possible. ” More: Luke Martin carries Mount Pulaski baseball to win | Top performers Glenwood responds in a big way The Glenwood offense — and Huff — had plenty of answers remaining.

Glenwood junior Quinten Hale led the Titans’ offensive charge, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored. In the bottom of the third, with Routt up 2-1, Hale singled to center to score Andrew Schwartz off Routt’s lefthanded ace pitcher Brady Turner. With the game tied 2-2, Huff was much more at ease on the mound, finishing his six-inning outing with back-to-back strikeouts.
