The Washington Nationals suffered the first shutout loss of the 2026 regular season

Just after the offense drew praise for scoring at least five runs in 13 of 17 games to start the 2026 regular season, the bats went quiet. The Washington Nationals were unable to produce anything offensively after a 2-0 loss Wednesday night. The loss pushes Pittsburgh ahead, 2-1, ahead of Thursday's series finale.

Tonight's loss marks the first shutout of the season for the Nats. This didn’t look like the Nationals team fans are used to considering that the Nationals entered the night ranked third across the MLB with 99 runs to open the 2026 slate. CJ Abrams eighth inning double play  It was a quiet night for the Nationals with not much action happening.

The first inning looked like it was going to be a good start to a strong offensive night. Curtis Mead found himself a double to right. Daylen Lile grounded out second but it was just enough to push Mead and put the Nats in scoring position.

But Brady House struck out swinging to close the inning. The Pirates however were able to get in two runs early in the first. This would be the only runs scored for the rest of the game.
