Texas A&M continues to add intrigue to the Maroon & White Game. this time with a $50,000 contest one lucky fan will compete in at halftime.

Texas A&M continues to redefine the relationship that fans and students have with the spring Maroon & White Game, adding a postgame concert , Legends flag football game and meet-and-greet , discounted food and drink prices, and now a $50,000 competition for one lucky Aggie to compete in. Michelle Elko, the wife of head football coach Mike Elko , announced that the game will feature a kicking competition for a cash prize. One fan will be selected to compete for the prize, although it remains uncertain whether the challenge is open to both students and fans, and just how far this kick will go.

Assuming the Aggies follow in the footsteps of College Football Gameday’s famous field goal challenge, the kick will be a 33-yard field goal. When I was a student at Texas A&M, I never paid too much attention to the Maroon & White Game. Despite not missing a home regular-season game outside my freshman year (I missed a game after contracting COVID), I attended the exhibition match just once during my collegiate career, and most of my friends (who were also die-hard fans) have similar experiences.

After all, it takes place during the peak of SEC baseball season, and finals/final projects are closer than students would like to admit. Texas A&M and the football program have clearly identified the Maroon & White Game as an area for improvement, given the various attempts to enhance the event's entertainment. Elko believes in the power of fan support, and this approach to engaging the fanbase and student body is a perfect way to encourage buy-in during an otherwise quiet period in collegiate football.

Perhaps the changes coming to this Maroon & White Game could inspire a new long-term approach to the game from the school. With a Legends meet-and-greet, Legends flag football game, discounted food and drink prices (including $6 beers), and now a $50,000 competition, the spring game could quickly transform from an offseason formality to a campus-wide (and potentially city-wide) attraction.
