Follow along, one last time, as the Detroit Red Wings end one of the most disappointing seasons in the team's 100-year history tonight against the Florida Panthers in Florida at 7 p. m. To put this latest collapse in perspective, Detroit is only the second NHL team to record 69 points in the first 53 games and not make the playoffs.
The other team was the Montreal Canadiens in 1969-70. They also had 69 points after 53 games and finished fifth and out of the playoffs in the Original Six days. Montreal though bounced back and won the Cup in 1971 behind the goaltending of Ken Dryden.
To put Montreal's collapse in 1970 in perspective, U. S. President Richard Nixon was just a year into his presidency and Neil Armstrong had just become the first man to walk on the moon less than a year earlier.
