The numbers behind City’s historic first Premier League title under Guardiola On this day in 2018, City were crowned Premier League champions for the first time under Pep Guardiola's guidance. And with a total of 19 major honours so far, our success has continued apace under the Catalan. However, the 2017/18 campaign, our ‘Centurions’ season, saw Guardiola’s men reach new heights and set a flurry of astounding records.
City are once again in the thick of the Premier League title race, with this year’s sure to go down to the wire. CITY+ | SUBSCRIBE TO ACCESS EXCLUSIVE CONTENT However, we’ve wound the clock back to 2018, to look at some of the key milestones and records that City reached in the first of our four titles under Guardiola... HIGHEST POINTS Guardiola’s side dropped just 14 points en route to the Premier League crown, surpassing the previous record held by Chelsea (95) in the 2004/05 campaign.
City had already broken new ground with a game to spare, but would reach an historic 100 points thanks to Gabriel Jesus’ injury-time goal against Southampton on the final day of the season. The accolade also highlighted our incredible consistency at both the Etihad Stadium and on the road. City picked up the same number of points away from home (another record) as we did on home soil.
MOST WINS City won 32 of our 38 Premier League matches in 2017/18 – the most of any side in the competition’s history across a single season. Incredibly, we equalled that tally again in our 2018/19 title-winning campaign, with Liverpool the only other team to match it one year later. An 18-match winning run between a 2-1 triumph over Bournemouth on 26 August and a 1-0 victory at Newcastle on 27 December is also another milestone which has never been bettered in the Premier League era.
