Raiders GM Spytek: teams interested in top pick 'know where they stand'
The Raiders GM was asked if the Raiders have received calls about trading involving the top pick and it sounds like his answer was short and sweet.
Sometimes the top pick in the NFL Draft is up for grabs. This is does not look like one of those years. Though the Raiders aren't revealing anything, all indications are they are laser focused on taking Fernando Mendoza with their pick at number one overall.
But that hasn't stopped a few teams from reaching out just in case. "We've gotten a few calls and those teams know where they stand," Raiders GM John Spytek said with a knowing grin. The look said it all.
The look of a man whose response to those interested teams was 'not a chance, we got our guy,' That's because for the first time in a very long time, the Raiders are sitting with their choice of any player in this draft and there's only one obvious pick, not only in terms of talent, but the Raiders need -- Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza. The Heisman winning QB is about as much of a lock for the top pick as they come. Any team looking to trade up would be doing so with the hopes of getting him too.
But the Raiders could not be more excited about being in the position where they can add a franchise quarterback and open their window to have the best shot at building a winner this millennium. So, yeah, to the rest of the NFL, no fault in asking, but I think the Raiders got their guy and you'll have to make other plans.
