A major talking point from last year’s Masters was McIlroy’s refusal to speak to playing partner Bryson DeChambeau. A similar situation happened again on Sunday, as McIlroy did not talk to Cameron Young at Augusta National.

Faldo has now rubbished claims that McIlroy did anything wrong on either occasion, using the great Jack Nicklaus as an example. Many considered McIlroy to have shown a lack of sportsmanship by not conversing with his playing partner at all.

As a result, Young was asked after the final round on Sunday whether he had shared a similar experience to DeChambeau. However, Faldo has completely rejected claims that McIlroy did anything wrong in staying in his own lane. Faldo revealed that six-time Masters champion Nicklaus had no interest in speaking to him in 1990.

“I want to have a little dig at the media,” he said. “Will you please shut up on this: ‘Oh, he didn’t talk to him again’, making a story out of it… “We didn’t say anything until 18, so please stop all this rubbish. ” Faldo then praised McIlroy with five words that summed up his performance at Augusta National.
