Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports “Sunday Night Football” on NBC is arguably the most popular game each week during an NFL season. Led by Mike Tirico and Chris Collinsworth, the primetime slot has the sport’s marquee matchups on the football field. However, could NBC Sports lose Sunday Night Football to another competitor in the NFL?

NBC is “at risk” of losing its Sunday Night Football package amid soaring NFL broadcasting rights prices, as reported by John Ourand . Netflix is “motivated to offer the sun and moon” for the Sunday night games if NBC is ever in danger of losing the primetime slot. When could Netflix earn the NFL rights to Sunday Night Football?

If Netflix ever acquired the NFL rights package, it would mark the second weekly primetime slot to be trapped behind a streaming platform. Amazon Prime Video acquired the “Thursday Night Football” package in 2021, with the games beginning during the 2022-23 NFL season. As of now, Netflix only has NFL games on Christmas, which began in 2024.

The 2026-27 NFL season is the last year of its deal with the sport. Meanwhile, the NFL’s current media rights deals run through the 2033 season, but the league has a contractual opt-out clause to terminate them early after the 2029 season. Therefore, if Netflix wants to make a run at Sunday Night Football, it likely wouldn’t be until 2030 at the earliest.
