While it almost sounds crazy to say, the New York Mets might have actually helped the New York Yankees out a bit this offseason.

Reports had indicated that the Boston Red Sox were interested in signing Toronto Blue Jays free agent Bo Bichette. Instead of landing in Boston, the star infielder took a deal with the Mets. Jim Bowden of The Athletic believes the Red Sox should have signed him and, as a result, could actually miss the playoffs due to not doing it.

โ€œThe Red Sox need another bat and a team leader. They really miss third baseman Alex Bregman, who signed with the Cubs in the offseason, and they really needed to pivot to Bo Bichette before he signed with the Mets. โ€ Bichette landing with the Mets helped a New York rival, but it kept him away from a division rival that clearly needed him, which is more important for the Yankees.

โ€œI think the Red Sox should be working hard at improving third base to free up Caleb Durbin to be a super-utility player. Yes, they need another bat if they want to make the playoffs. โ€ If the Red Sox had landed Bichette, it wouldโ€™ve made them a much more dangerous team in the division, which would've impacted the Yankees.
