The Hoosiers have landed a commitment from Markus Burton, a Hoosier State native who started his career at Notre Dame.

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana basketball landed one of this portal cycle’s most-coveted guards Monday, when Notre Dame transfer and Penn grad Markus Burton committed to the Hoosiers . The 2023 IndyStar Mr. Basketball , a Penn grad, averaged 19.

1 points and 3. 8 assists per game over 69 career appearances with the Irish. An ankle injury cost him all but 10 games last winter.

Burton’s commitment hands Darian DeVries a readymade backcourt focal point. The Mishawaka native can create and score in equal measure, in addition to his prodigious scoring ability. He’s also comfortable in a significant role — Burton never averaged fewer than 30 minutes per game in three years at Notre Dame.

Burton committed to Indiana over Houston, among others. He visited Kelvin Sampson’s program before coming to Bloomington, and then pulled the trigger soon after. Burton figures to be among Indiana’s most important players next season.
