Virginia Tech’s Tobi Lawal, Saint Louis’ Robbie Avila among players committed to PIT

Virginia Tech’s Tobi Lawal, North Carolina’s Seth Trimble and Miami’s Malik Reneau are among the ACC standouts slated to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament this week at Churchland High. Also among those on the tournament’s eight-team rosters hoping to impress pro scouts: St. Louis’ Robbie Avila, the hefty, goggle-wearing center with a number of nicknames, including “Cream Abdul-Jabbar,” “Larry Blurred” and “Milk Chamberlain.

” The tournament begins Wednesday with 6 and 8 p. m. games and runs daily through Saturday.

The championship game is scheduled for 7 p. m. Saturday.

Lawal averaged 12. 3 points and a team-high 8. 5 rebounds per game as a senior this season.

The 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward shot 54% from the floor and recorded six double-doubles. The 6-9 Reneau was a first-team All-ACC selection after starting all 35 games and averaging 18. 9 points, 6.
