Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images The Avalanche will be without head coach Jared Bednar during their two-game road trip through Alberta that begins on Monday. Assistant coaches Nolan Pratt and Dave Hakstol will share coaching duties while Bednar is away.
Bednar was helped off the bench by a team trainer on Saturday at Ball Arena after an errant puck struck him in the side of the face. He was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation later in the evening and was not made available to media postgame. Ahead of their flight to Edmonton, the team announced that Bednar sustained facial fractures and a corneal abrasion.
He will not require surgery at this time and is expected to make a full recovery. There was no confirmation as of yet if he’ll be behind the bench in the regular-season home finale at Ball Arena next Thursday. Colorado plays the Oilers on Monday and in Calgary on Tuesday.
Bednar’s injury took place early in the third period. The accidental incident came off the stick of Vegas Golden Knights forward Keegan Kolesar. The Knights went on to win 3-2 in overtime.
