Sergio Garcia shatters his driver in Masters meltdown

Sergio Garcia’s Sunday at the Masters took a dramatic turn on the second hole at Augusta National, as the Spaniard shattered his driver in a fit of frustration before later creating a moment of levity by carrying fellow countryman Jon Rahm’s clubs. The 2017 Masters champion , already out of contention, displayed visible anger after his opening shot on the par-5 second hole veered significantly right. Following a bogey on the first, Garcia lost his composure on the second tee, slamming his club into the turf twice after hitting his ball into a bunker.

He then struck a table holding a green cooler, causing the head of his driver to dangle precariously before he completely ripped it off the shaft. The outburst recalled Garcia’s disqualification from the 2019 Saudi International for damaging greens, though this time he managed to regain control. The Spanish duo were one of the early starters on the final day of what promises to be a thrilling finish to the Masters.

Rory McIlroy and Cameron Young shared the lead heading into the final round after the Northern Irishman threw away a six-shot lead on Saturday. There is also increasing pressure from the chasing pack, with several players in with a shot of Masters glory on Sunday evening. Last year’s runner-up Justin Rose is just three shots back after a consistent opening three rounds, while world No 1 Scottie Scheffler is also only four shots off the lead with 18 holes to play.
