CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Illini football took a break from the traditional spring practice for one that featured a special twist. Amidst mom’s weekend on the U of I campus, players’ moms took to the practice field with their sons for a second straight season.

These football families are grateful for the quality time together on the football field. “Absolutely love it,” Brittanie Trimble, mother of wide receiver Brayden Trimble, said. “I asked Brayden probably four months ago, ‘When’s Mom’s Weekend?

’ So I was really excited to be able to come down and enjoy the boys, and Coach B is the best coach ever. ” “Like to even do this and consider the moms, I think it’s a blessing. ” “It truly is FamILLy, Courtney Shaw, mother of defensive lineman Kingston Shaw, said.

“It’s not a cliché just written on the walls. It’s a standard, it’s a heart, it’s a pulse. You just feel the spirit of unity amongst the brotherhood here, amongst the coaches.

” Head coach Bret Bielema said family attendance for the practice nearly doubled from a similar practice held last season. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
