Hansi Flick explains decision to start Lamine Yamal and Pedri for Barcelona against Espanyol
No rest for the duo.
BARCELONA, SPAIN - APRIL 08: Hansi Flick, Head Coach of FC Barcelona, speaks to the media during a post match interview following the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Quarter-Final First Leg match between FC Barcelona and Club Atlético de Madrid at Camp Nou on April 08, 2026 in Barcelona, Spain. Pedri was taken off at half-time against Atletico last time out due to some discomfort, while Yamal has also been feeling a niggle ahead of the match.
Flick spoke about his team selection ahead of kick-off and insisted both players are in good shape. “Changing our mindset isn’t complicated, it’s our job, what we have to do. Pedri is fine and fresh, maybe I can replace Lamine in the second half,” he told DAZN.
Flick also spoke about handing Gavi his first start since returning from a long injury lay-off, adding: “Gavi is on another level after the injury, I really appreciate his preparation; he has come back better and on the field he gives us many options. ” Barcelona go into the game knowing that a win will move them nine points clear at the top of the table after Real Madrid dropped points again on Friday night.
