The two newly-promoted sides battled and both scored late in the first half, which turned out to be the end of the scoring. Then came the North Rhine-Westphalia derby, and that proved to be one of the games of the season. Borussia Mönchengladbach opened the scoring within a minute, but then by the seventh minute the score was 2-1 to Köln.
