Matanzas moves on in district boys and girls lacrosse tournaments
The Matanzas boys and girls lacrosse teams advanced to the district semifinals, with Vincent Ferrugiaro and Addison Alfred scoring seven goals each.
PALM COAST — Vincent Ferrugiaro took matters into his own hands. In the first quarter of the District 4-2A boys lacrosse quarterfinals against Flagler Palm Coast on April 10, the Matanzas senior struck for three goals. In the second quarter, he added another.
He kicked off the third quarter with two more, giving the Pirates a 6-0 cushion on their home field. The Bulldogs eventually got on the board with a few strikes, and other Matanzas players joined the scoring party in the fourth quarter. But Ferrugiaro posted a game-best seven goals in his team’s 10-5 victory.
The fourth-seeded Pirates will face top-seeded Buchholz in the district semifinals on April 14. “It means a lot to us,” Ferrugiaro said. “My freshman year, we lost to FPC in districts — first round also, actually to our head coach (Dominic Tavolacci).
I played against him. To beat them again in districts is pretty sweet as a senior. ” The win boosted Matanzas to 4-10.
