The outlet claims the 26-year-old has attracted Newcastle’s attention due to his performances for Napoli and the Italy national team, but a transfer is seemingly contingent on Sven Botman’s future in Tyneside.
“Newcastle United have identified Alessandro Buongiorno as a potential replacement for Sven Botman if the Dutchman is lured away from St James’ Park this summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal,” the report says. “Aged 26, Buongiorno is viewed as one of the most effective centre-halves in Serie A, having impressed for both Napoli and the Italian national team in recent seasons. “ According to CaughtOffside , Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with the defender in recent months, while Chelsea reportedly explored a move for him last year.
It’s fair to say that, whether Botman leaves or not, Newcastle need defensive reinforcements following a season in which they have looked vulnerable at the back and face a few departures from the unit ahead of next season, including Fabian Schar’s. It remains unclear whether Napoli would be willing to allow Buongiorno to go or enter talks for his sale this summer. Buongiorno is an important part of their squad, and the Italian side are unlikely to allow him to leave without a significant offer.
Buongiorno cost Napoli £30 million, and any potential deal would likely require a premium above that figure, which is unknown if NUFC would be willing to pony up at this time.
