Good Sports: Fresno City College baseball aiming for championship

Yahoo Sports

The number one Juco team in California plays right here in central Fresno. It's a group the Fresno City staff has a hard time comparing to any other Rams squad, and pitching coach Eric Solberg has pretty much seen it all. "It's the deepest pitching staff I've ever had, which is a big statement," he said.

Going on 38 years with the Rams. Solberg knows what it takes to win a state championship. With this season's talent, coach Mitch Karraker and the Rams could have a sixth state title in reach.

"We have some really good arms this year," Karraker said. "The camaraderie we have is second to none since I've been here. " It's the pitchers that have helped City to the best start of any season in program history.

"Don't get comfortable where we're at," says pitcher Wyatt Johnson. "Every day's a grind, so day in and day out, just keep doing what we're doing. " A Clovis North grad, Johnson is one of the Rams' starting pitchers, making it the second generation of Johnson's Solberg has coached.

"43 years ago, I coached his dad," Solberg said. Todd Johnson went on to become an All-American at Fresno State, and the staff at City see similar potential with his son, Wyatt. Throw in Bowen Salyards, last season's pitcher of the year, and the Rams aiming for a top seed and the potential to start their post-season run at home.
