49ers bring in much-needed CB depth, add free agent to 1-year contract

The 49ers added another cornerback to their defense this offseason after signing Nate Hobbs earlier.

The San Francisco 49ers added depth to their secondary ahead of the 2026 NFL draft. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport , the 49ers signed ex-Miami Dolphins cornerback Jack Jones to a one-year deal. The full details of the deal were not immediately reported.

Jones, 28, started all 17 games for the Dolphins this past season — his first with the team. He finished the year with one interception, six defended passes, two forced fumbles, 77 combined tackles and four tackles for a loss. Jones was a fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2022, where he played 18 games over two seasons.

The Patriots waived him after Week 10 of the season and he was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders soon after. Jones played 24 games with the Raiders over the next two season before he signed with the Dolphins in 2025. For his career, Jones has eight interceptions (including four he returned for a touchdown), 33 defended passes, 213 combined tackles and 11 tackles for a loss.

Cornerback wasn't a big need for the 49ers this season, but the addition of Jones should almost round out the unit led by Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green, Upton Stout and fellow free-agent acquisition Nate Hobbs . Coincidentally, Hobbs and Jones played together in Las Vegas from 2023 to 2024. With five solid veterans on the roster, it wouldn't make much sense for the 49ers to draft another unless they find someone who they feel can be a cornerstone piece after this season.
