The 49ers lost to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, but were they actually better than the Eagles who dominated Kansas City the following season?

Former Chiefs DE claims ‘23 49ers were better than ‘24 Eagles who dominated in Super Bowl originally appeared on The Sporting News . Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here . The San Francisco 49ers have consistently been one of the top teams in the NFC since the combination of John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan took over leadership of the team, but despite reaching the playoffs six of the last eight seasons, they still haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1994.

It’s almost puzzling to reflect on the 49ers success — which includes massive runs in the playoffs and huge wins in big moments —and understand how they still have yet to host the Lombardi Trophy during the Shanahan/Lynch era. In 2019, the 49ers were absolutely dominant all season. They cruised to a (13-3) record, earned a first round bye and beat the Packers and Vikings by 17 points each in the Divisional Round and NFC Championship.

But the 49ers fell to the Chiefs (30-21) in Super Bowl LIV and it took them four more seasons to return to the big game. After an outlier (6-10) finish in 2020, the 49ers finished the 2021 season with a (10-7) record and clawed their way to the NFC Championship before falling to the Rams . In 2022 San Francisco looked dominant yet again, and finished the regular season with a (13-4) record, dominated in the first two rounds of the playoffs, but were hammered by the Eagles (31-7) in a devastating NFC Championship loss.

Everything looked primed for the 49ers to finally get over the hump in 2023, when they finally made it back to the Super Bowl for a rematch against the Chiefs. The two teams traded blows throughout the game and made key kicks in the fourth quarter to take the game to overtime. The 49ers won the toss and had the ball first, but were stifled by the Chiefs in the red zone and had to settle for a field goal.
