Longtime Notre Dame assistant Silverio Mirao is new Tritons coach
Silverio Mirao is the new hockey coach at Green Bay Notre Dame. The former St. Norbert College standout has been a Tritons assistant since 2006.
The one constant for the Green Bay Notre Dame hockey team since it returned to the ice in 2006 has been Silverio Mirao. When Notre Dame needed a new coach after Mike Szkodzinski recently stepped down, athletic director Matthew Koenig quickly got to work to find his replacement. He spoke to former and current players, parents and longtime friends of the program.
“When it was all said and done, there was unanimous support for our next head coach,” Koenig wrote in a letter to players and parents. The man for the job was right in front of him the entire time. Mirao will take over a program he helped build under longtime coach Cory McCracken for 17 seasons and Szkodzinski for the last three.
“It’s exciting,” Mirao said. “I really thought about it three years ago, but just with work and family, it just didn’t seem like it was the right time. Now, I’m in a situation where it is the right time.
“I just believe in the program. I believe in the school. It has been a part of what I’ve been involved with for 20 years.
