Michigan basketball lands commitment from Tennessee transfer J.P. Estrella

It didn’t take long for Michigan basketball to make its first addition out of the transfer portal. Tennessee transfer J. P.

Estrella shared news of his commitment to the Wolverines on his Instagram account Thursday, which comes just three days after Michigan’s season ended and two days after the portal window opened. Estrella, a 6-foot-11 forward, averaged 10 points and 5. 4 rebounds in 18.

3 minutes while appearing in 33 games with 13 starts for the Volunteers this season. Michigan pounded Tennessee in the Elite Eight, 95-62, in Chicago en route to winning the program’s first national championship in 37 years. Estrella had seven points (3-for-9 shooting) and seven rebounds in 25 minutes in that contest.

He redshirted during the 2024-25 season after playing in only three games due to a foot injury that required surgery. Michigan coach Dusty May has struck gold with frontcourt players in the portal the past couple seasons, starting with 7-footers Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin two seasons ago and the trio of Yaxel Lendeborg, Morez Johnson Jr.

and Aday Mara this season. It’s possible May will have to replace the entire starting frontcourt from Michigan’s national title team. Lendeborg is out of eligibility.
