Texas A&M star QB praises 'legitimate' quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch
After Thursday's 10th practice, Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed praised new QB coach Joey Lynch's tactics so far this spring.
Texas A&M's 10th spring football practice was another opportunity for media members to watch third-year starting quarterback Marcel Reed take the field and connect with his revamped wide receiver rotation that now includes Alabama transfer, Isaiah Horton , combined with four standout freshman wideouts from the 2026 signing class, should result in one of the more prolific passing games in the SEC. This offseason, after re-signing with the Aggies, head coach Mike Elko made several staff changes, including former wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins becoming the program's new offensive coordinator, while offensive assistant Joey Lynch now serves as the quarterbacks coach, which was one of the more questioned moves, but could pay off given his background with Marcel Reed going back to his high school playing days. Lynch, who was a Broyles Award nominee during his long stint at Ball State (2010-2019), served as the Cardinals' assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, leading to short stints with Colorado State and Vanderbilt, where he attempted to recruit Reed to play for Vanderbilt during his two-year stint as the Commodores' offensive coordinator.
Relationships are everything as a positional coach, and while Marcel Reed's remaining issues are centered around his footwork in the pocket and general passing mechanics, confidence to use his legs when the pocket breaks down, and trust in his instincts as a passer to move the chains instead of forcing the ball into tight coverage. This is a two-way street, as Joey Lynch needs to continue building a solid foundation and help Reed reach his full potential, while the Tennessee native must figure out why his play has declined against stiffer competition at the end of the 2025 season, which included four interceptions against Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff. After Thursday's 10th spring practice, Marcel Reed spoke to the media, stating that having a "legitimate" quarterbacks coach who is "focused on us" instead of the offense, alluding to former offensive coordinator Collin Klein's role as OC and QB coach, which could have interfered with Reed's play down the stretch of the season.
