"Unfortunately, I suffered an injury after Miami, and even though I tried everything to recover in time, I am not ready to compete," Sabalenka said on Thursday on Instagram, without giving injury details.

Sabalenka last won the Sunshine Double with titles in Indian Wells and Miami. She was due to start the clay court season at the star-studded Stuttgart event where she reached the final four times but is yet to lift the trophy. The entry list still boasts the three other players from the top four of the rankings: 2024 winner and Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, twice winner Iga Swiatek and French Open champion Coco Gauff.

In all, there are six top-10 players present, plus defending champion Jelena Ostapenko and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen.
