Golfweek Masters Survey: Who will be honorary starters in 20 years?
Golfers predict who will be the Masters honorary starters in 20 years, with Tiger Woods being a popular choice.
As the Masters quickly approaches, Golfweek/USA Today is continuing its tradition of asking questions about everyone's favorite place, Augusta National Golf Club. The Honorary Starters have become another tradition that fans look forward to during Masters week. Honorary Starters first made an appearance at the Masters in 1963 with Jock Hutchinson and Fred McLeod beginning the tradition.
Since then, 11 golfers, each with an extensive history at Augusta National Golf Club, have helped kick off the Masters with the ceremonial first tee shots. Jack Nicklaus (since 2010), Gary Player (2012) and Tom Watson (2022) hold the distinction as the current honorary starters. We asked players: Who do you think will be the honorary starters 20 years from now?
Jason Day Tiger Woods. That’s a safe bet. Curtis Strange There’s a good chance I won’t be around.
Ben Crenshaw will be the next guy. But it’s not all about records; it’s about who is beloved. Gary Player That is impossible to say.
