Mets Get Blown Out By Arizona, 8-2, As David Peterson Struggles To Stay in Rotation
The New York Mets had a four-game winning streak before today's game against Arizona, but Peterson put them in a hole.
The New York Mets dropped the second game of their three-game set as they had their four-game winning streak broken by the Arizona Diamondbacks, 8-2, as starter David Peterson continued to struggle to the point where he may be pitching himself out of the rotation. Peterson had a rough go of it, and as a result the Mets never really had a chance in this one. His troubles started in the top of the first, when a Corbin Carroll double, a bunt single by Geraldo Perdomo and a sacrifice fly by Gabriel Moreno gave Arizona a 1-0 lead.
They added four more in the second, with the big hits being an RBI single by Ketel Marte, another double by Carroll and a sacrifice fly by Perdomo that keyed the rally. That was basically the ball game. Arizona starter Ryne Nelson shut down the Mets with 5-2/3 innings of one-run ball as he scattered five hits and struck out five.
The Mets didn’t score until the sixth on an RBI single by Brett Baty, but the Diamondbacks countered with two more runs on an RBI double by Jorge Barrosa in the seventh to put the game away. Mark Vientos drove in New York’s final run on a sacrifice fly, but that run was strictly cosmetic as three Diamondbacks relievers kept the Mets from mounting a comeback. Sean Manaea finished the game up for the Mets with four innings of two-run ball, and it’s fair to ask if Manaea might be slotting in for Peterson soon.
The Mets tried this with Manaea last September, though, and as soon as Manaea was put back in the rotation his struggles continued, which feels highly likely now given that his velocity remains below 90 mph. Offensively, this could be what life without Juan Soto looks like for the next 2-3 weeks as the outfielder recovers from his calf strain. The Mets were able to pound out plenty of runs against the San Francisco Giants over the weekend, but today they got just one extra base hit with Baty adding a double.
