Masters 2026: Major champion removed from Augusta National for violating phone policy, per report
Mark Calcavecchia was removed from the property on Tuesday, according to Golfweek.
AUGUSTA, Ga. —How serious is Augusta National about its no-phone policy? Serious enough apparently for a claret jug winner to pay the price when crossing it.
According to Golfweek’s Adam Schupak , 1989 Open champion Mark Calcavecchia was removed from the club on Tuesday for using his phone on property. When Schupak reached Calcavecchia by phone, the golfer declined to elaborate on the infraction but also didn’t deny he was asked to leave by security. “I’ve got nothing negative to say about Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters, so I think we should literally hang up right now,” Calcavecchia said in a short conversation with the reporter.
In running afoul of club rules, Calcavecchia joins a distinguished list. Coaches have been dismissed for wearing shorts. Fans and media have also been removed from using their phones, including the f ormer tour player and Golf Channel broadcaster Charlie Rymer in 2011.
In 1994, the former tour player and CBS broadcaster Gary McCord’s color description of Augusta National’s green speeds led to the end of his Masters broadcasting career . “I don’t think they mow these greens, I think they bikini wax them,” McCord said on air. Three days later, McCord was told he would be removed from the tournament broadcast team.
