Boston acquired Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates, and although he didn’t make the rotation, he was expected to be an impact long-man reliever. However, Oviedo has suffered an injury, and he was placed on the IL with a right flexor strain. Although Oviedo won’t be throwing for six weeks, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the positive is that surgery isn’t needed.
“Disappointed that he’s going to be out for a while,” Cora said, via The Athletic. “It’s nothing — as of now — that needs surgery. So that’s a positive.
” Oviedo appeared in one game, going 3. 2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking one. The right-hander said the forearm muscle is inflamed, and not the elbow ligaments, which is a positive sign for a return this year.
