UNC basketball targeting top assistant for Michael Malone's staff

Yahoo Sports

Michael Malone has his eyes on a top assistant in Chuck Martin to join his staff.

Michael Malone was just introduced as the next head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels on Tuesday afternoon, making it official as he replaces Hubert Davis. After a two-week coaching search, the Tar Heels' landed on Malone to take the job. Now, he's getting ready for a busy and important offseason in Chapel Hill which includes building his roster and coaching staff.

As Malone gets set to make those decisions, a report on Tuesday suggests he's targeting a big name for his lead assistant job. InsideCarolina is reporting Tuesday morning that North Carolina is targeting Chuck Martin as its lead assistant coach. Martin has spent the past two seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Arkansas, following John Calipari from Kentucky.

He's one of the top recruiters in the nation and would be a big get for Malone. The two are familiar with each other as well. They worked together at Manhattan University in 1999-2000 and both are East Coast guys.

If Martin were to join UNC's staff, there would be a buyout required and I imagine we would hear more about it in the coming days.
