Jasprit Bumrah’s unwanted hat-trick: First time in 8 years, just fourth ever

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made it abundantly clear that he does not go by reputation when facing a bowler, when the 15-year-old launched the first ball he faced off Jasprit Bumrah for a six. Sooryavanshi then went on to score another maximum in the same over, startling not just the ace bowler, but everyone on the field and spectators as well. Sooryavanshi was the talk of the town for his 14-ball 39 blitz in the RR vs MI fixture in IPl 2026, even eclipsing his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal’s match-winning knock of 77 not out off 32 deliveries in the rain curtailed affair at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati on Tuesday evening.

MI succumbed to their second loss of the season, unable to match the tempo set by Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi, failing to chase down 150 in the stipulated 11 overs. They eventually ended up with 123/9. The MI bowlers were in for a tough night with the two youngsters on song racking up 80 runs in the first five overs, essentially setting up the game for the home team.

Every bowler, barring Hardik Pandya went for over 10 runs per over, with Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult conceding 22 runs each in their solitary overs. Bumrah, after conceding 14 runs in his 1st over, gave away 18 runs in his next two, while Shardul Thakur leaked 36 in his 2 and the impact sub Allah Ghazanfar was taken for 21 runs in his 2. Pandya returned a respectable figures of 2-0-17-0.

And amid this mayhem, Bumrah returned wicketless for the third consecutive match. A rarity in Bumrah’s illustrious T20 career. For Bumrah, this unwanted hat-trick of going wicketless for three matches in a row was in fact the first time in nearly 8 years and only the fourth time in his entire T20 career.
